Oikos is a small town quarter in the east part of Enschede. The town council made the design of Oikos as one of the highlights in the field of Sustainable Building in the Netherlands. The site is selected by the Ministry of Housing as a demonstration project. Main issue is the control of the ground water level. The area is threatened by drying up. For that reason the rainwater is kept on site. Gutters and wadi's collect rainwater. During this process the water can percolate in the ground and the ground water is supplied with fresh water. The wadi's are coloured in blue. The 35 houses designed by BEAR Architecten are coloured in yellow.

En hier zijn alvast kaartjes voor de visite, plus een routebeschrijving: Neem vanaf de A1 afslag A35 richting Enschede. De snelweg gaat net voorbij Enschede over in autoweg. Ga bij de 1e stoplichten links. Rotonde rechtdoor. Stoplichten rechts. Volgende stoplichten ook rechts. Door een woonwijk, aan het einde links, over een oude dijk, langs camping. De eerste rechts (Broekheenseweg). Kruising rechtdoor. Eerste links (Bultveldmaatweg). Met de bocht mee naar links (nu heet het Apollolaan). Met de bocht mee naar rechts. Eerste links (tussen rioolbuizen door). Tweede links is de Atalantalaan. Nummer 15 is halverwege. Welkom!
